Although watercolours are my all time favourite medium along with watercolour pencils. I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying using soft pastels.
I like the way they force me to not fuss with details, but to get shapes and tones down straight away. I also like the way they can be blended or you can use broken colour to get the colours you want. I love the speed with which you can get a reasonably finished looking result.
These are my first three attempts.

Now that you're up and running with pastels (and doing nicely) let yourself go with some strong passionate colour. Show us what you feel about your subject! With that Celtic red hair I know you can!!!

These are great Lorraine, reminds me of those gorgeous early pastels by Degas that he did on the Normandy coast. Glad to hear you're having fun!
And there's David taunting us all towards more reds and purples!
Hi Lor Lor - found you by clicking on your comment in my blog iris post. My first Irish contact I think who has commented. Have a friend in Co. Meath and plan to visit later this year. My daughter is Laura and her pet name is LorLor. Enjoyed scrolling through your posts and simply love the Easter visit painting - what a wonderful topic idea. As for the moleskin drawing must enlarge it and have a better in depth look. Then what can I say about this latest post of pastels - cant believe they are your first in this media. Pastels are stunningly immediate arent they??
